September 03, (THEWILL) — Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have raided a suspected terrorist hideout in Peva, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, arresting five persons believed to be associates of a notorious bandit operating in the area.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of Thursday, September 3, followed credible intelligence received by the troops at about 12:30am on the location of the suspected bandit’s hideout.

According to the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, troops of Sector 1, in conjunction with troops of Sector 3, moved to the location and launched a precision raid.

However, the suspected terrorists had fled the area before the arrival of the troops, having allegedly been alerted by informants about the advancing security forces.

The troops subsequently searched the general area and arrested five persons suspected to be associates of the fleeing terrorist. The operation also led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifle magazines and 46 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Other items recovered were one woodland camouflage jacket and jungle hat, four charm vests and assorted charms.

The military said the arrests and recovery of the weapons-related items and other paraphernalia had provided useful leads that could assist ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend members of the criminal gang who escaped.

The task force did not disclose the identities of the five suspects or state whether they had been formally charged with any offence.

The raid is part of sustained intelligence-driven operations being conducted by Operation Whirl Stroke across its Joint Operations Area to disrupt the activities of terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.

The military said the operation demonstrated its continued determination to deny criminal groups freedom of action and prevent them from using communities and surrounding areas as bases for their activities.

The Joint Task Force also reassured residents of Taraba State and other communities within the operational area of its commitment to maintaining pressure on terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements until peace and security are fully restored.

It urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies.

According to the task force, cooperation from residents remains critical to the success of ongoing military operations and efforts to track fleeing members of criminal groups.
