September 09, (THEWILL) — Nigerian beauty queens have made their mark far beyond the national pageant stage, representing the country in competitions across Africa and around the world.
Over the years, these competitions have produced major global victories, continental crowns and memorable placements for Nigerian contestants. For some, pageantry became the beginning of careers in entertainment, fashion, business and public service, while others became part of Nigeria’s pageant history through the titles they brought home.
From global competitions to specialised international pageants, Nigerian contestants have continued to compete on some of the biggest stages in the industry. Their wins have not only added to the country’s pageant record but also shown how far a national crown can take its wearer.
Here are 10 Nigerian beauty queens whose journeys went beyond the national stage to earn international crowns and recognition.
1. Agbani Darego – Miss World 2001

Agbani Darego remains one of the most celebrated names in Nigerian pageantry after making history at Miss World 2001.
After winning the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria title, Darego represented the country at the Miss World competition in Sun City, South Africa. On November 16, 2001, she was crowned Miss World, beating 92 other contestants and becoming the first Nigerian to win the title. The official Miss World record lists Nigeria as both the overall winner and Africa’s continental winner that year.
Her victory was particularly significant because Darego became the first indigenous African woman to win the Miss World crown. At 18, she became one of the most recognisable Nigerian faces in international fashion and pageantry.
The victory also marked a turning point in her career. Darego later became a successful international model and founded the fashion and lifestyle brand AD by Agbani.
2. Bianca Onoh – Miss Intercontinental 1989 and Miss Africa 1989
Before she became known for her later career in diplomacy and public service, Bianca Onoh was already making history through pageantry.
Representing Nigeria, Onoh won the Miss Africa title in 1989 before going on to win Miss Intercontinental that same year. The Miss Intercontinental competition was held at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos, with contestants representing different countries and territories. The official Miss Intercontinental titleholder archive lists Onoh as the 1989 winner.
Her Miss Intercontinental victory was particularly notable because she became the first African woman to win the title. She later resigned the crown during her reign to pursue other interests
Onoh’s pageant success would eventually become one part of a much broader public career that included diplomatic and public service appointments.
3. Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu – Miss Africa 1987
Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu was another early Nigerian pageant winner to make an impact beyond the national competition.
She won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria title in 1986 and subsequently represented Nigeria at Miss Africa, where she won the continental crown in 1987. The MBGN records identify her as the 1986 winner and list her subsequent Miss Africa 1987 title.
Her pageant career was eventually followed by a move into public life. Chuba-Ikpeazu later became a politician and served as a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, making her one of several former Nigerian beauty queens who moved from pageantry into public service.
4. Omowunmi Akinnifesi – Miss Tourism International 2005
Omowunmi Akinnifesi became one of Nigeria’s prominent beauty queens of the mid-2000s after winning the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria title in 2005.
Her international pageant career did not stop with the national crown. Akinnifesi has spoken about winning the Miss Tourism International title in Ukraine, as well as Miss Bikini International, describing the two international victories among three crowns she won during her pageant career.
Her pageant experience also connected her to tourism, environmental advocacy and fashion. She has continued to work on projects linked to tourism and environmental initiatives in Nigeria and beyond.
5. Collete Nwadike – Exquisite Face of the Universe 2015
Collete Nwadike represented Nigeria at the 2015 Exquisite Face of the Universe pageant in São Tomé and Príncipe.
The competition brought together beauty queens from around the world, with Nwadike representing Nigeria at the international final. She went on to win the crown, bringing another international pageant title to Nigeria. Contemporary reports described her as the first Black winner of the competition.
Her victory also came with recognition in other categories, including the Best Evening Gown award.
Nwadike had already built experience in beauty and entertainment before the international competition, and her pageant victory added another dimension to her career in the Nigerian fashion and media space.
6. Tamunosoye “Soye” Karibi-George – Miss Africa International 2024
Tamunosoye Karibi-George represents a more recent generation of Nigerian beauty queens making their mark on the continental pageant circuit.
In 2024, she represented Nigeria at Miss Africa International in Accra, Ghana, competing against other African delegates for the continental crown. She emerged as the winner, giving Nigeria another international pageant title.
Following her Miss Africa International success, she went on to represent Nigeria at the Miss World 2026 finals in Vietnam, where she won the prestigious Africa’s Top Model fast-track title and advanced to the Top 12 of the competition.

7. Precious Omoghene Zino – Miss Eco Tourism World 2021
Precious Omoghene Zino made history in 2021 when she became the inaugural Miss Eco Tourism World.
Representing Nigeria, Zino competed in the first edition of the international competition in Durban, South Africa. She emerged as the winner on October 16, becoming the first woman to hold the title.
Zino had been crowned to represent Nigeria earlier that year in Calabar. Following her international victory, she was expected to promote Nigeria’s ecotourism destinations and support environmental initiatives such as tree planting.
Her victory added an environmental dimension to Nigeria’s international pageant representation, linking the crown to tourism and sustainability.
8. Precious Okoye – Miss Africa 2022
The 2022 edition was held in Calabar, Cross River State, but brought together contestants from across Africa. Representing Nigeria, Okoye went on to win the Miss Africa crown, adding another continental title to the country’s pageant history.
Her victory is also a reminder that an international pageant does not necessarily have to be hosted outside Nigeria to produce an international crown.
9. Chidimma Adetshina – Miss Universe Africa and Oceania 2024
Chidimma Adetshina delivered one of Nigeria’s most notable recent performances on the global pageant stage.
After winning Miss Universe Nigeria, Adetshina represented Nigeria at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico. She finished as first runner-up to Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig, giving Nigeria one of its strongest results at the competition.
She was also crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania after emerging as the highest-ranked African contestant at the competition. The 2024 event featured contestants from 125 countries, making her second-place finish particularly significant.
Her performance in Mexico transformed her pageant journey into one of Nigeria’s biggest recent international pageant moments.
10. Nyekachi Douglas – Miss World Africa 2019
Nyekachi Douglas represented Nigeria at Miss World 2019 in London, where she reached the Top Five of the global competition.
The official Miss World results list Douglas among the five finalists and crowned her Miss World Africa 2019.
Her performance was one of Nigeria’s strongest Miss World results since Agbani Darego’s 2001 victory. Douglas also won the Miss World Top Model challenge, adding another achievement to her time at the competition.
Douglas had earlier won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria title in 2019 and was selected to represent the country among more than 100 contestants at the Miss World final.
