November 25, (THEWILL) – Burnley were condemned to a seventh consecutive home defeat after conceding two goals in five minutes to lose 2-1 against West Ham on Saturday. The defeat equals Newport County’s 53-year-old record of starting a league campaign with seven straight losses at home.
The Clarets had taken the lead through Jay Rodriguez’s 49th-minute penalty and looked on course to claim their first Turf Moor victory since May. However, an 87th minute own goal by Dara O’Shea following pressure from West Ham youngster Divin Mubama made it 1-1. Tomas Soucek then volleyed home a dramatic winner deep into injury time.
The result is a cruel blow for Burnley, who had contained a lacklustre West Ham missing key attackers Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio for much of the match. The Clarets will also feel aggrieved after strong penalty appeals from Luca Koleosho were waved away in the first half.
The game burst into life in the second period, with Burnley awarded a spot kick just two minutes after the break. Rodriguez made no mistake to give Vincent Kompany’s side hope of a vital three points to lift them off the bottom of the table.
However, the Hammers began piling on pressure late on and finally made the breakthrough when O’Shea diverted the ball into his own net. Soucek then volleyed home at the death to condemn Burnley to yet more Turf Moor misery.
