October 27, (THEWILL) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction associated with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has rejected attempts by President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to blame previous administrations for Nigeria’s current hunger and economic hardship, insisting that the government must take responsibility for the country’s challenges and provide practical solutions.

A statement signed by National Publicity Secretary of the party, Jungudo Mohammed, accused the APC of shifting responsibility for the economic difficulties confronting Nigerians instead of addressing rising food prices, unemployment, insecurity and the declining purchasing power of households.

THEWILL reports that the reaction followed comments by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka during an appearance on News Central’s breakfast programme, where he blamed the opposition party for the hunger and economic hardship in the country.

The faction also faulted Tinubu over similar remarks made in Kaduna State during the flag-off of his 2027 re-election campaign, where the President blamed opposition parties that governed Nigeria before the APC came to power for the country’s current difficulties.

In its response, the Wike-backed PDP faction described the comments as attempts to evade responsibility and divert public attention from the performance of the APC-led Federal Government.

“Our message to the APC is simple: stop the blame game and start taking responsibility. Nigerians deserve solutions, not excuses,” Mohammed said.

He insisted that the PDP was not responsible for the hunger Nigerians were experiencing and urged the ruling party to focus on policies and interventions capable of providing immediate and sustainable relief.

According to him, the government in power must answer for its stewardship and present a credible pathway towards economic recovery, food security and improved living standards.

Mohammed challenged the APC to explain the specific measures it was taking to make food affordable, support farmers and strengthen local food production.

He also called on the ruling party to outline its plans for creating jobs, improving security, fighting corruption, ensuring reliable electricity supply, reducing transportation costs and restoring the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

The PDP spokesman said citizens deserved clear answers on how the government intended to address these concerns rather than continued political arguments over the records of previous administrations.

He acknowledged that the Tinubu administration might have recorded some achievements but cautioned that such recognition should not be interpreted as an endorsement of all its policies or an acceptance of responsibility for the government’s current shortcomings.

“Acknowledging any genuine achievements must not be misconstrued as an endorsement of all government policies or an acceptance of attempts to shift responsibility for current economic difficulties to previous PDP-led administrations,” he said.

Mohammed argued that after more than 10 years in power, the APC should account for its performance and explain the concrete measures it was implementing to address the country’s challenges.

He said the ruling party should demonstrate its commitment to improving citizens’ welfare instead of continually dragging the PDP into its own shortcomings.

The PDP spokesman maintained that Nigeria’s economic challenges could not be resolved by repeatedly blaming previous administrations, adding that historical circumstances could provide context but should not serve as a permanent justification for the performance of the government in power.

He said every administration must be judged by its policies, achievements and, most importantly, the living conditions of the people it governs.

“Nigerians remember the standard of living and the security situation under previous PDP administrations,” Mohammed said.

He added that citizens were demanding practical solutions to hunger, economic instability and insecurity rather than endless political arguments and attempts to shift blame.

The PDP faction urged the APC to take ownership of its record, address the country’s pressing challenges and fulfil the promises it made to Nigerians.

Mohammed also expressed confidence that Nigerians would assess political parties based on their records, policies and commitment to public welfare.

“We believe that the growing desire among Nigerians for a return to PDP leadership reflects their yearning for better governance, improved living conditions, and a more secure and prosperous country,” he said.

The PDP governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015 before losing the presidential election to the APC, which has remained in power since then. Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, succeeding former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor and a prominent PDP figure, has expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
