Viral Video: LASTMA Investigates Officer Over Fight With Passenger

SAN FRANCISCO, September 13, (THEWILL) – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has summoned a female officer over an altercation she had with a passenger in a vehicle.

The officer was seen in a viral video, fighting with the passenger in the vehicle, as passersby tried to separate them.

According to the agency, the incident occurred at Ikeja on Friday and the officer acted out of line regardless of the circumstances. She is, therefore, expected at its headquarters on Monday for investigation and disciplinary action.

“This video was forwarded to the management and the officer has been invited for investigation and disciplinary action for misrepresenting the agency. The incident occurred at Aromire junction off Awolowo Way, Ikeja yesterday, Friday, 11th September. She is considered to have overreacted, regardless of the circumstances. She is expected at the headquarters on Monday, 14th September,” LASTMA said.

Meanwhile, the agency said that the State government has impounded 13,461 vehicles for traffic violations in the last eight months.

LASTMA General Manager, Olajide Oduyoye disclosed this on Friday during an oversight tour of the office office by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He said that the agency had a total staff strength of 4,239, with three officers dismissed while 18 others had died in active service.

The LASTMA boss said that 13,461 vehicles were involved in traffic violations between January and August this year.

Oduyoye told the committee that the agency was facing challenges of “inadequate provision of space for impounded vehicles, non-availability of zonal office, change/refresh rooms for officers, non-availability of functional patrol vehicles and inadequate recovery vehicles, signage for speed limits and no parking on the highway.”

The general manager expressed concern over the intrusion on the highway by improper planning approval given to filling stations and event centres.
