October 27, (THEWILL) – Harry Kane was denied a 95th-minute winner in a disputed and tumultuous end to Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw with Sporting CP, forcing them to wait in their quest to advance to the UEFA Champions League’s round of 16.
At the very end, Kane appeared to have ensured Spurs’ passage out of Group B when he blasted past Antonio Adan, from close range, but a VAR review controversially determined the striker was offside.
Sporting had taken the lead earlier thanks to a goal from Marcus Edwards, a former Spurs youth player who later moved to Portugal. However, Rodrigo Bentancur’s header tied the score.
Due to Antonio Conte’s enraged response to Kane’s goal being disallowed, he was sent off by the referee and his team now needs a win at Marseille on Tuesday, in order to advance to the next round.
Their next encounters will pit Sporting against Arouca in the Primeira Liga, while Tottenham travels to Bournemouth in the English Premier League.
