September 09, (THEWILL) — Liverpool began their European campaign on the front foot, but it was Atletico Madrid who made the early breakthrough.
The hosts created the first clear opening when Dominik Szoboszlai won possession and released Alexander Isak, but the Swedish striker dragged his effort wide.
Bradley Barcola then had an opportunity after finding space behind the Atletico defence, only for Jan Oblak to deny the £123 million summer signing.
Instead, Atletico punished Liverpool at the other end.
Julián Álvarez spotted the run of Marcos Llorente and picked him out with a precise pass. Llorente raced through and calmly finished beyond Alisson to give Diego Simeone’s side a 17th-minute lead.
It was Llorente’s fifth goal against Liverpool, making him a particularly troublesome opponent for the Reds.
Szoboszlai Brings Liverpool Back
Liverpool responded with sustained pressure as Florian Wirtz, Isak and Barcola continued to test Atletico’s defence.
Oblak remained a major obstacle, denying Liverpool on several occasions and keeping the visitors ahead.
But the pressure finally told five minutes before the interval.

Liverpool did not have to wait long after the restart to complete the comeback.
Barcola had another opportunity just four minutes into the second half after combining with Wirtz, but his finish rolled narrowly wide of the post.
Moments later, Liverpool punished Atletico again.
Rio Ngumoha created the opening with a clever move down the left before the ball eventually fell to Mac Allister on the edge of the penalty area.
The Argentine midfielder struck first time with his left foot, sending a powerful effort into the corner to put Liverpool ahead in the 50th minute.
It was the kind of finish that settled a match that had remained finely balanced, and it proved decisive.
Barcola’s Debut Ends With a Concern
The result will have pleased Iraola, but Barcola’s first Liverpool start provided mixed emotions.
The French winger showed flashes of the pace and directness that convinced Liverpool to spend heavily on him, but his finishing was not as sharp.
He missed three opportunities that could have given Liverpool greater breathing room before being substituted in the 60th minute after appearing to feel discomfort in his calf.
Iraola had already acknowledged the need to manage Barcola’s fitness after the forward missed Liverpool’s pre-season preparations, making his early withdrawal something for the club to monitor.
Liverpool continued to threaten after his departure and thought they had added a third when Jeremie Frimpong found the net late on, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
