March 07, (THEWILL) – Manchester City booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a comfortable 6-2 aggregate victory over Danish side FC Copenhagen. Pep Guardiola’s reigning UCL and English champions extended their remarkable unbeaten home record in Europe to 30 matches with the routine win at the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens wasted little time in strengthening their grip on the tie after a 2-0 win in the first leg. Manuel Akanji volleyed home from a Julian Alvarez corner before the Argentine doubled City’s lead with a long-range effort after just nine minutes.
Copenhagen pulled one back against the run of play when Mohamed Elyounoussi finished smartly following a neat one-two. However, Erling Haaland restored City’s four-goal aggregate advantage on the stroke of half-time with a clinical finish after a superb ball over the top from Rodri.
The visitors refused to go down without a fight in the second half, but clear-cut chances were at a premium as City comfortably saw out the victory. The result extends Guardiola’s side’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 matches ahead of a crunch English Premier League clash with Liverpool, on Sunday.
Copenhagen, meanwhile, remained winless on all eight of their trips to England after failing to spring an upset at the Etihad, which, on the verdict of their overall display, was always going to be a very tall order.
