August 22, (THEWILL) — Tottenham arrived at the Gtech Community Stadium with renewed optimism after spending £237m on new players during the summer in an attempt to put last season’s struggles behind them.
Instead, Spurs were outplayed by a confident Brentford side that seized control early and punished their opponents’ defensive weaknesses.
Brentford took the lead after 12 minutes when Keane Lewis-Potter found space inside the Tottenham penalty area before finishing from Mamadou Sangare’s delivery.
Tottenham struggled to respond as Brentford continued to dictate the tempo and create the better opportunities.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Vitaly Janelt reacted quickest after Antonin Kinsky had saved Mathias Jensen’s effort, tapping the rebound into the net.
Spurs went into the interval two goals down and had failed to register a shot on target, leaving De Zerbi with plenty to address.
The Tottenham manager responded by introducing Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur at the start of the second half, but the changes failed to transform the visitors’ fortunes.
Brentford struck again just four minutes after the restart.
Sangare’s effort was saved by Kinsky, but Michael Kayode reacted fastest to the rebound and fired home to make it 3-0.
Tottenham were then given an opportunity to get back into the contest when Bentancur brought down Kevin Schade inside the penalty area.
Igor Thiago stepped up to take the resulting penalty but struck the post, with Kinsky having gone the wrong way.
It proved to be little more than a brief reprieve for Spurs, who remained second best as Brentford comfortably protected their three-goal advantage.
The result represents a particularly disappointing beginning for De Zerbi, who was appointed to lead Tottenham into a new era after a difficult previous campaign.
