After being left out of the England World Cup squad, Ivan Toney led Brentford to a remarkable 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, keeping the Premier League’s defending champions from taking the league’s top spot.
Toney’s header over City’s Ederson Moraes gave Brentford the lead after only a quarter of an hour played, but City equalised by exerting significant pressure through Phil Foden’s spectacular half-volley.
In a stop-start second half, Pep Guardiola’s team was unable to overcome the resolute Bees, and Toney’s dramatic goal eight minutes into stoppage time capped off a brilliant Brentford counter.
Infuriatingly, the outcome saw City finish the World Cup break two points behind leaders Arsenal even before the Gunners’ trip to Wolves later on Saturday, which they will now play with a little less pressure.
With the World Cup imminent, the Premier League will be on hiatus. Both teams will resume play in December at the other side of Qatar 2022. On Boxing Day, Brentford host Tottenham at home, whilst City travel to Leeds on December 28.
