The midfielder said goodbye to his Manchester City team-mates on Tuesday before travelling to Newcastle, where he was presented to supporters ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with West Brom.

Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto in February 2025 and made 59 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.

Before his move to England, he developed at Barcelona and established himself at Porto, giving him experience in both La Liga and the Portuguese top flight.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson revealed that Gonzalez had been the club’s primary target for the position.

“We’ve worked patiently on this transfer for a number of weeks. This was the one we wanted, and we’re delighted to welcome Nico to Newcastle United this evening,” Wilson said.

He added that Gonzalez’s experience with Barcelona, Porto and Manchester City made him an ideal fit for the club’s plans.

Newcastle rebuild midfield

Gonzalez arrives at Newcastle as the club reshapes its midfield following the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali to Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

His arrival gives Jaissle another experienced option in the centre of the pitch as Newcastle prepare for the new season.

The Spaniard is also the latest addition to an ambitious summer recruitment drive that has seen Newcastle bring in players including Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Amar Dedic, Lukas Hornicek and Sean Steur.

Newcastle have also sanctioned significant departures, with Tonali joining Tottenham for £100m, Guimaraes moving to Arsenal for £75m and Anthony Gordon completing a £69.3m transfer to Barcelona.

With Gonzalez now added to the squad, Newcastle will hope his Premier League experience can help fill the void left by their midfield departures and strengthen the team under Jaissle.
