THEWILL Editorial: Freedom For Leah Sharibu And Religious Tension

BEVERLY HILLS, May 04, (THEWILL) – Amidst escalating killings in Nigeria, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN recently warned that Leah Sharibu, the lone Dapchi schoolgirl still in the Boko Haram custody should not die in captivity.

A statement by the Special Assistant on Media and Communications to CAN President, Adebayo Oladeji, said Leah’s death could spell doom for the country.

He said this was apt as she is being held because of her unflinching commitment to the Christian faith.

This is why President Muhammadu Buhari must intensify efforts to ensure that Ms. Leah is freed without further delay. All well meaning Nigerians and the international community should also take up the battle for her safe return.

THEWILL believes the Boko Haram is using Leah to up tensions between Christians and Muslims with the purpose of stoking a religious war. All stakeholders who believe in the peace and unity of Nigeria must be conscious of this fact so that we don’t play into the plot of the terrorist organization.

This is why we urge leaders of religious bodies to tone down their rhetoric of war. The war we want to continue and eventually win is our collective battle against the Boko Haram, terrorists, marauders, kidnappers, robbers, fraudsters and the looters of our treasury.

As hopeful millions continue to seek 15-year-old Leah and other abductees’ safe return to their families, THEWILL urges government to also extend help and counseling to the families of the five Dapchi girls who died in the terrorists’ custody, and to every person or family that is a victim of terrorist attack nationwide.
