June 13, (THEWILL) – Edin Terzic has shockingly resigned as head coach of Borussia Dortmund, the Bundesliga giants confirmed on Thursday.
The 41-year-old German tactician stepped down from his role despite leading Dortmund to the Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley earlier this month.
Terzic departs Dortmund after his second spell in charge of the club. Though his contract was due to expire in 2025, the former interim boss asked Die Schwarzgelben to terminate his deal prematurely.
“It was a huge honour to lead this club to a DFB Cup final and recently a Champions League final,” Terzic stated. “After our final at Wembley, I asked the club bosses for a talk because I’ve been at BVB for over 10 years now, with five as a coach and two-and-a-half as head coach.”
The German manager felt it was time for a fresh start at Dortmund after over a decade at the club. “I have the feeling that our new beginning should also come with someone new on the touchline,” Terzic explained. “After intense discussions, my feelings haven’t changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund all the best. It’s not goodbye but till next time.”
During his two seasons at the helm, Terzic oversaw 96 competitive fixtures for Dortmund, winning 55 matches and averaging an impressive 1.93 points per game. He previously served as interim boss for seven months in 2020/2021, guiding the club to their fifth DFB-Pokal title that campaign.
