March 18, (THEWILL) – Team Nigeria has regained the second position on the medals table after winning two gold medals on Day 10 of the African Games in Ghana. The Nigerian athletes now have a total of 27 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals, putting them ahead of South Africa.
South Africa had briefly overtaken Nigeria for second place on March 14, but now drops back to third with 25 gold, 29 silver, and 38 bronze medals. While the South African total medal count of 92 exceeds Nigeria’s 76, the Nigerians’ superior gold medal haul puts them in the runner-up position.
Egypt continues to dominate the games, leading the medals table comfortably with 90 gold, 35 silver, and 29 bronze medals for a total of 154 – twice as many as Nigeria. Algeria remains fourth with 22 gold, 30 silver, and 37 bronze medals, while Tunisia rounds out the top five nations.
The African Games began on March 8 in Ghana and have featured athletes from across the continent competing in a variety of sports. For Team Nigeria, regaining second place is a point of pride as they look to secure more medals before the games conclude, especially as track athletes join the action.
