August 26, (THEWILL) — Veteran Nigerian journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, is dead.
Oladipo died in Lagos on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
His death has thrown the Nigerian media industry into mourning, with journalists, publishers and professional colleagues paying tribute to a man whose career cut across some of the country’s most prominent news organisations and the emerging digital publishing sector.
The circumstances surrounding his death were still emerging as of Wednesday. Reports by media organisations said he suddenly took ill while at his office and attempted to seek medical attention. However, details concerning the exact cause of death had not been officially established.
Oladipo’s death was also confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, an organisation in which he played a significant leadership role.
Career Across Nigeria’s Traditional And Digital Newsrooms
Oladipo was part of a generation of Nigerian journalists whose professional careers straddled the era of traditional newspapers and the rapid emergence of online journalism.
He worked with major media organisations, including Newswatch, PUNCH, Nigerian Tribune and Nigerian Compass, rising through editorial positions and gaining experience in reporting, newsroom management and journalism leadership.
He later ventured into digital publishing and founded The Eagle Online, building the platform into one of Nigeria’s recognised online news organisations.
His career therefore reflected the wider transformation of Nigerian journalism, as established print journalists increasingly moved into the digital space following the rapid expansion of internet access, social media and online news consumption.

Four Years As GOCOP President
Beyond his work as a publisher, Oladipo was a founding member of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, established to provide a professional platform for Nigeria’s online publishers and promote ethical standards in digital journalism.
He was elected President of GOCOP in 2017 and served two consecutive two-year terms.
Oladipo remained involved in the affairs of the Guild after leaving office, subsequently serving in other capacities within the organisation. In 2024, he was recognised as GOCOP President Emeritus and continued to contribute to the Guild’s activities.
Oladipo’s involvement in the media industry extended beyond his publishing platform and GOCOP.
In October 2024, he emerged as President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, an initiative established to promote collaboration, resource sharing, training and professional development among media practitioners.

Reacting to his death, colleagues have described Oladipo as a committed journalist, publisher and media entrepreneur whose contribution extended beyond his own organisation.
Veteran journalist Lanre Ogundipe described the news as shocking and mourned the sudden loss of a colleague popularly known as “DOT.”
Ogundipe recalled Oladipo’s contribution to both traditional journalism and the digital media frontier, noting that he demonstrated the resilience of a journalist who understood the need for the profession to evolve without abandoning its core values.
He also highlighted Oladipo’s leadership of GOCOP and his contribution to giving structure and professional identity to Nigeria’s expanding online media space.
