The Houses of Assembly in Osun, Edo, Oyo and Rivers have endorsed the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across Nigeria, a major policing reform currently before state legislatures.

The Oyo State House of Assembly has backed the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police Services, becoming the latest state legislature to advance the proposal aimed at changing Nigeria’s policing structure.

The resolution followed the transmission of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.

Filed by the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Speak-Out Africa, Ushakase Agwa and Abdullahi A. Sani, the suit specifically challenged the passage of the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, relating to the establishment of State Police.
