Atiku Abubakar, has demanded immediate publication of the preliminary voters’ register containing more than 103 million names, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of creating serious doubts about the credibility of the 2027 general election.

The battle for the soul of Anambra has assumed a new dimension ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with former governor and NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, seeking to retain his overwhelming support in his home state while his successor, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, mobilises support for President Bola Tinubu.

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki, has rejected any support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, faulting Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his reported call for PDP candidates to back the President.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the right of an association to seek registration as a political party in Nigeria is not absolute, holding that prospective political parties must satisfy the requirements of the Constitution, the Electoral Act and applicable guidelines before they can be recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The lawmakers met with the President on Sunday night, where discussions focused on the grievances that prompted their exit and efforts to reconcile them with the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The push for a broad opposition front against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election has suffered a fresh setback after Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ruled out any possibility of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) withdrawing its presidential ticket for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In an interview with THEWILL on the decision of aggrieved candidates of parties to sue the Commission over the removal of their names in the published list of candidates for the Governorship and Assembly polls. He explained that the Commission did not disqualify candidates, but the political parties disqualified themselves by falling short of the Constitutional requirement, as affirmed by the Supreme Court judgement mandating them to submit a membership register that contains the names of their candidates.

President Bola Tinubu’s decision to stay back in Abuja, while members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council embark on campaigns for his re-election, may colour the presidential campaign as candidates of the opposition parties pounce on the idea.

The campaign organisation said there should be “no second term without accountability,” accusing Tinubu of attempting to avoid direct engagement with voters after allegedly failing to fulfil key promises made during the 2023 presidential campaign.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the ADC-PCC, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the allegation in a statement on Wednesday while reacting to the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja.
