August 31, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed that they are yet to receive prize monies for Super Falcons players from football’s governing body, FIFA.
THEWILL recalls that Spain defeated England 1-0 to win the tournament, which concluded on 20 August in Sydney. Based on recalibrated bonus fees, each member of the Super Falcons squad is due $60,000 for qualifying for the second round of the recently concluded Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Speaking on the Super Falcons’ entitlements, NFF Media Director Ademola Olajire said the Federation had settled all of the players’ fees before the World Cup. Once the funds arrive from FIFA, the players will be compensated accordingly, he assured.
Like the Super Falcons, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, who also reached the round of 16, are waiting for their prize money from FIFA. The CEO of the South African Football Association, Lydia Monyepao explained FIFA pays the funds through each country’s association, not directly to players.
She said FIFA has no direct relationship with players as the modalities ensure that the football body engages with member associations, who then distribute the money to individual players. This clarification was deemed necessary as the were reports claiming FIFA was going to pay the players directly.
