June 29, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have made progress in the latest FIFA ranking published by the global governing body on Thursday.
After being ranked 40th in the previous ranking released in April, the Super Eagles have now moved up one spot to the 39th position. The three-time African champions earned a total of 5.68 points, allowing them to climb into that slot from their previous April position.
In their most recent international fixture, Nigeria triumphed over Sierra Leone with a 3-2 victory, booking their qualification for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in 2024. This single game contributed to their improved ranking. The Super Eagles’ advancement in the ranking places them ahead of Ghana’s Black Stars, Cote D’Ivoire’s Elephants, and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions.
Furthermore, keeping their top six status within Africa is a significant achievement for the team, as it ensures their inclusion among the top seeds in the AFCON draw, scheduled later this year. In the top slots on the continent, Morocco remains the highest-ranked nation, currently placed 13th worldwide. Following Morocco are Senegal’s Teranga Lions (18th), Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles (31st), Algeria’s Desert Warriors (33rd), and Egypt’s Pharaohs (34th).
At the global level, Argentina retains its position as the number one ranked nation, with France, Brazil, England, and Belgium following closely behind.
