Super Eagles End Long Wait For Friendly Victory With Narrow Win Over 10-Man Mozambique

October 16, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, emerged victorious 3-2 against Mozambique in an international friendly match on Monday night at the Estádio Municipal de Albufeiraa stadium.

The win marked the Eagles’ first triumph in a friendly fixture since defeating Egypt 1-0 in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations warm-up match back on 26 March 2019, ending a drought of 1,665 days without a non-competitive victory.

Manager José Peseiro rang the changes from the side that started against Saudi Arabia, with only Francis Uzoho and Bruno Onyemaechi retaining their places.

The Mambas of Mozambique surged into an early lead through Sporting Lisbon’s Geny Catamo in the 6th minute. However, the Super Eagles responded quickly through Terem Moffi’s equaliser in the 19th minute. Frank Onyeka then put Nigeria ahead with a powerful 30th minute strike.

Mozambique were reduced to 10 men after Edmilson Dove’s 38th minute foul on Joe Aribo. Moses converted the resulting penalty to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead at the break. Faisal Bangal pulled a goal back for the Mambas from a set piece in the second half, but Nigeria held on for a 3-2 victory.

The Super Eagles next face Lesotho (at home) and Zimbabwe (away) in FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month.
