August 31, (THEWILL) – Catalan club Barcelona reached an agreement with English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday for the transfer of Emerson Royal for €25 million in a deadline day move.

As THEWILL reported, Royal returned to Camp Nou this summer after two seasons on loan at Real Betis. Barcelona had shared Royal in a three-way agreement with Atlético Mineiro and Real Betis that brought the Brazilian to La Liga in January 2019.

After Barca sealed the complete ownership of Emerson, he started the season in a Barca shirt and made three appearances in the league. He was in the starting lineup in Barca’s recent win over Getafe at Camp Nou on Sunday.

In an official post on their website that confirmed the transfer and made the move public, Barcelona thanked Royal “for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future.”

The defender was born on January 14, 1999 in São Paolo, Brazil, and christened Emerson Aparecido Leite de Souza Junior, though he is better known as Emerson Royal.

The full time Brazil international also recently represented his country in the continental competition, the 2021 Copa América, where Brazil lost in the final to archrivals Argentina.
