October 02, (THEWILL) – The Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee has imposed sanctions on Atletico Madrid following recent incidents during a La Liga derby match against Real Madrid.
The committee ordered a partial closure of Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium for three matches, specifically targeting the Fondo Sur stand where the disturbances occurred.
During the match, some supporters in the Fondo Sur section threw objects, including lighters, onto the pitch. These projectiles were aimed at Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, though he was not struck. The referee suspended the game for approximately 15 minutes due to the unruly behaviour.
In addition to the partial stadium closure, Atletico Madrid has been fined €45,000 for the incidents, which the disciplinary committee deemed “very serious” offences. The match, which was temporarily halted with Real Madrid leading 1-0, eventually ended in a draw after Atletico equalised late in the game.
Atletico Madrid has taken swift action in response to the events. The club announced on Monday that they had identified and permanently banned one supporter found guilty of throwing an object onto the pitch, a demonstration of the club’s commitment to maintaining order and safety during matches.
