December 12, (THEWILL) – There is heightened fear among residents of Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, as gunmen enforcing the Sit-At-Home order invaded the town on Monday.

THEWILL gathered that the gunmen, who stationed themselves at different locations in the city, commenced shooting at about 8:50 am on Monday.

A resident source told THEWILL that the gunmen began operation simultaneously at Mechanic village, G-hostel area and the new market area along Abakaliki-Enugu road.

He said, the shooting has caused markets, banks and schools to close as people scamper for safety.

A breakaway faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by former Head of Radio Biafra, Simon Ekpa, had declared Dec 9 to Dec 14, 2022, sit-at-home in South-East states to sensitise the natives not to participate in the 2023 elections.

While his order has been condemned by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a press statement issued by IPOB National Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, dissociated the group from the Sit-At-Home.

Powerful stated that “IPOB never issued any sit-at-home order on these days mentioned above because we are not miscreants, senseless, or jobless people.

“Every Biafran and residents in Biafra Land should ignore such order from untrained and brainless individuals, whose agenda is to make Biafra agitation unattractive to our people. Every Biafran must go to their normal business on those days.”
