SAN FRANCISCO, June 25, (THEWILL) – The Senate will reconvene to consider and approve President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees anytime the President sends their names to the Senate, President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, said Thursday, after an abrupt adjournment of plenary till July 21st following tensions at the Red Chamber over elections into principal offices.
The Senate will also reconvene to consider “any matter of urgent national importance” and “any important national assignment,” he said in a statement.
In a bid to put a spin on the abrupt adjournment, the statement from the Senate President’s media office said the adjournment of plenary “was meant to give the Senate Ad-Hoc Committees on Legislative Agenda and Review of the Senate’s Finances time to conclude their work and submit their reports. The two committees were given one-week to submit their reports.
“However, the Senate assured that it will reconvene at any time before the adjourned date to consider any matter of urgent national importance or to attend to any national assignment requiring its attention.
“The Senate’s Ad-hoc Committee on Financial review is the first time the Senate is setting up a body to review its own salaries, allowances, and the overhead cost of running the Senate with a view to realigning them to reflect the present economic situation in the country.”
The All Progressives Congress led National Assembly has been engulfed in crisis since it was proclaimed about two weeks ago. The leadership of the political party and some power blocks within the party have been battling for control of the National Assembly in what appears to be the first blood ahead of the 2019 Presidential primary of the APC.
