October 13, (THEWILL) – The International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) has extended the tenure of Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Finance, Mohammed Aljadaan, as chair, by one year, following a request by members to ensure continuity in the committee’s work and ongoing reforms.
The extension, announced on Tuesday, will take effect after Aljadaan’s current three-year term ends on January 3, 2027. Aljadaan has accepted the extension, according to a statement issued by the committee.
The decision comes as the committee continues its work on major policy issues affecting the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the international monetary and financial system.
Continuity In Leadership And Reforms
The IMFC said members valued Aljadaan’s leadership and believed extending his tenure would help maintain momentum on the committee’s key priorities, particularly its work on significant ongoing reforms.
The extension is expected to provide stability in the committee’s leadership as members continue deliberations on issues affecting the global economy and international financial cooperation.
Aljadaan was selected to chair the committee for an initial three-year term, as announced by the IMF in 2023. The additional year will extend his leadership beyond the conclusion of that original mandate.
The committee did not specify individual reforms that would benefit from the extension, but highlighted the importance of maintaining progress on its broader policy agenda.

Role Of IMFC In Global Economic Policy
The IMFC is the IMF’s principal policy advisory committee. It deliberates on key issues facing the Fund and the international monetary and financial system, providing a platform for finance ministers and central bank governors to discuss shared economic challenges.
Its responsibilities include considering developments in the global economy and providing guidance on the IMF’s strategic direction and policy priorities. Although the committee offers policy advice, the IMF’s formal decisions are taken through its established governance structures.
The IMFC has 25 members, reflecting the composition of the IMF Executive Board. Each member country or group of countries that elects an executive director appoints a representative to the committee.
This structure enables member countries and groups to contribute to discussions on international financial stability, economic cooperation and the Fund’s response to emerging global challenges.
Committee Meets Twice A Year
The IMFC normally meets twice annually, during the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings and the Annual Meetings held in the autumn.
These gatherings provide opportunities for policymakers to assess global economic conditions, discuss financial risks and coordinate approaches to issues affecting the international monetary system.
Aljadaan’s extended tenure will allow him to continue chairing the committee through another year of these deliberations, supporting continuity as members address evolving economic and financial challenges.
The extension underscores members’ preference for sustained leadership as the committee advances its policy agenda and continues discussions on reforms within the IMF and the wider international financial system.
