September 29, (THEWILL) – The Senate has approved a further extension of the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
The extension was approved on Tuesday, September 29, following the consideration of a bill sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).
The bill seeks to amend the 2025 Appropriations (Repeal and Enactment) Act to extend the implementation period of the capital component of the budget by three months.
Presenting the bill for consideration, Bamidele said the rationale for the amendment was “compelling and pragmatic”, particularly against the backdrop of the level of implementation of capital projects under the 2025 budget.
According to him, the execution of capital projects had not reached optimal levels despite the release of approximately allocated funds to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
He said the extension would provide additional time for the implementation of projects and programmes already captured in the 2025 capital budget.
The Senate subsequently subjected the bill to clause-by-clause consideration before approving the extension of the implementation period to December 31, 2026.

The legislation is titled, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 from 30th September, 2026 to 31st December, 2026 and for other Related Matters, 2026 (SB. 1067).”
The latest extension keeps the capital component of the 2025 budget open for implementation beyond the original September 30, 2026 deadline.
The Senate’s action is to prevent the expiration of the implementation window before outstanding capital projects and programmes under the 2025 Appropriation Act are fully executed.
With the new legislative approval, MDAs will have until December 31, 2026, to implement the affected capital provisions of the 2025 budget, subject to the completion of the required administrative and financial processes.
