August 31, (THEWILL) – At least 52 people have been confirmed killed and 43 others injured, in a fire incident that engulfed a five-storey building on Thursday, in central Johannesburg, South Africa.
The spokesperson of the South African Emergency Management Services, Robert Mulaudzi, said the injured, along with those who suffered smoke inhalation, have been taken for treatment at local hospitals.
“We’re on 52 bodies, which we have recovered and also 43 people who sustained minor injuries. We are moving floor by floor, conducting these body recoveries”, Mulaudzi said, adding the death toll was expected to rise.
Although firefighters have put out the flames, search and recovery operations were ongoing.
