Residents Loot Warehouses In Kebbi

April 1, (THEWILL)- Residents of Kebbi State, on Saturday night, looted government and private-owned warehouses in the State.

This is coming after similar incidents occurred in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja as well as Suleja in Niger State.

In the latest incident, THEWILL gathered that the looters, mainly youths, targeted a government storage facility located in the Bayan Kara area of the State capital, overpowering securities on guard to make away with essential food items, including grains.

Also, private warehouses and retail stores in the vicinity were raided.

A source in the area told newsmen on Monday, that a broken-down truck filled with a variety of grains, intended for distribution within Birnin Kebbi, was also plundered.

Chairman of the Bayan Kara Market Food Vendors Association, Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, confirmed the incident.

Gwadangwaji said the looters, mainly youths, “forced their way in and looted the government warehouse and some of our shops”, adding that several shops and warehouses were also set ablaze by the marauders.

In a statement on Monday, Ahmed Idris, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, condemned the attacks.

“The hoodlums had earlier attacked the consignment of food items brought to the state for distribution to the people by Dangote before targeting the government warehouse,” he said.

Idris lamented the theft of foodstuffs, purchased by the State Government for its citizens, totalling over N5 billion distributed across more than 200 trucks.

“It is unfortunate those who broke into the warehouse had gone there to steal what belongs to the people of the state,” he said, adding that measures had been taken to secure the warehouses against future incidents.
