October 18, (THEWILL) – Enugu Rangers earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Algerian side MC Alger in the first leg of their CAF Champions League Preliminary round clash at the Moshood Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday.
Nigeria’s sole survivor in the competition produced an impressive performance to boost their chances of advancing to the group stage.
The NPFL Champions left it late to score two goals, but it was enough to give them a first-leg advantage.
Kenneth Igboke gave Rangers the lead from the penalty spot after Chimobi Igwilo was brought down in the box in the 84th minute.
Two minutes later, James Emo added the second goal following a sublime counter-attacking move to make it 2-0 ahead of the second leg.
Both sides ended the game with 10 players after Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh was sent off just 11 minutes into the clash, while Oussama Benhaoua received his marching orders in the 52nd minute.
Enugu Rangers are the only Nigerian team remaining in the competition after Rivers United crashed out in the last round in the hands of San Pedro of Ivory Coast.
Rangers will travel to Algeria for the second leg on Friday.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, El-Kanemi Warriors played out a 2-2 draw at home against Raja Casablanca in the first leg of their second-round clash.
The second leg will be played at the Stade Mohammed V Stadium on Friday.
