December 02, (THEWILL) Real Madrid returned to the top of La Liga on Saturday, following a routine 2-0 home victory over struggling Granada. Brazil forward Rodrygo continued his red-hot form, rifling home to seal the win at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The hosts kicked off having slipped to second place after Girona’s 2-1 upset of Valencia earlier in the day. However, first-half goals from Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo’s second-half strike allowed Real to swiftly regain the La Liga lead on head-to-head record.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side stretched their unbeaten run across all competitions to 13 matches with the win, dating back to September’s derby loss against Atlético. The hosts were dominant early on and the pressure told in the 26th minute when Toni Kroos split the defence with a superb pass to allow former Man City man Diaz to calmly lift the ball over Granada’s backup keeper André Ferreira.
Granada rarely threatened a comeback in the second period as Real patiently monopolised possession. Their patience paid off just before the hour mark when Ferreira saved Jude Bellingham’s initial effort but Rodrygo hammered home the rebound. Bellingham wanted a first-half penalty after a robust challenge but his appeals were waved away.
Federico Valverde nearly added a third late on but was denied by a brilliant one-handed stop from Ferreira. The win pushed Real to the La Liga summit as they claimed their fifth straight league win.
