September 05, (THEWILL) — Real Madrid endured a very different evening in Spain as they suffered their first league defeat.
Troy Parrott came off the bench to score the only goal as Real Betis defeated Madrid 1-0, handing Mourinho his first defeat since returning to the Real Madrid dugout.
The Republic of Ireland striker entered the game in the 68th minute and struck nine minutes from time.
Parrott reacted quickest after Thibaut Courtois saved a header from Nelson Deossa, pouncing on the rebound to give Betis the lead.
The goal was the 24-year-old’s first for Betis since completing his £17.1 million move from AZ Alkmaar.
Madrid thought they had rescued a point when Carlos Espí produced a spectacular finish, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Madrid were handed one final opportunity to escape with a point when they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after Vinicius Jr was fouled.
Mbappe stepped forward but saw his effort saved by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles.
