Rangnick Confirms Lengthy Discussion With Martial On Exit Plans

December 27, (THEWILL) – Ralf Rangnick has spoken on Frenchman Anthony Martial’s desire to leave Manchester United. Martial has started just two league games this season and expressed his intent to continue his career elsewhere.

The 26-year-old spoke “at length” with Rangnick and the fact that he has made four appearances across all competitions with one goal to his credit just has come up.

“We spoke at length on Wednesday,” Rangnick said.

“He explained to me he’s been at Manchester United now for the last seven years and he feels it’s the right time for a change, to go somewhere else.

“I think in a way this is understandable, I could follow his thoughts but on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club.

“We have COVID-19 times, we have three competitions in which we still have high ambitions and want to be as successful as we can be.”

It is hardly the kind of illustrious conclusion that might have been predicted for a youngster who, when United signed him from Monaco in September 2015, became the most expensive teenager in football history.

After Angel Di Maria and Juan Mata, he was United’s third most expensive signing at the time, with a £36 million price that included add-ons, bringing the total worth of the deal to £58 million.

After the additions of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Jadon Sancho, as well as the emergence of England international Mason Greenwood, he has become something of a fringe player for the club, scoring 79 goals in 268 appearances.

Rangnick said that there has been no concrete interest in Martial ahead of the January transfer window, indicating that he may stay at United.
