November 27, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi inscribed his name once more in the annals of the FIFA World Cup records, as he played a key role in Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup group stage victory over Mexico, on Saturday.
The Argentine star started the scoring in the second half with a powerful goal from outside the penalty area, and he was given credit for the assist for Benfica midfielder, Enzo Fernandez’s curling goal late in the game.
Messi’s assist was highly significant as it made him the first player to ever have at least one assist in five different World Cups, opening another instalment of the competition for football accolades between Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.
As THEWILL reported, Ronaldo made history on Thursday, by becoming the first person to ever score in five different World Cup competitions.
Messi has six assists in all throughout his World Cup appearances and only needs three more to surpass compatriot, Diego Maradona’s mark as La Albiceleste’s most World Cup assists record holder. Messi is back in action for Argentina on Wednesday, against Poland in the group stage finale.
