September 15, (THEWILL) – Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has dared the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to investigate allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other violent crimes, declaring that he should be prosecuted if found guilty.

Buba made the declaration in Bauchi while announcing that he had voluntarily submitted himself to the three security and intelligence agencies for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

The senator said his decision was aimed at putting the matter beyond political arguments and public speculation, insisting that allegations of such magnitude should be subjected to professional investigation by the institutions with the mandate to establish the facts.

Through his legal team led by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, Buba said he had made himself available to the DSS, Police and DIA to examine the allegations against him.

“I have nothing to hide nor fear. It is for this reason that through my legal team led by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, I have voluntarily submitted myself to the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations levelled against me.

“I will not ask Nigerians simply to take my word for it. That is precisely why I have submitted myself to the relevant security agencies. Let the professionals investigate,” the senator said.

‘If There Is Evidence, Produce It’

Buba challenged anyone who had evidence linking him to criminal activities to present such evidence to the appropriate authorities.

He said he was prepared to face the consequences if an investigation established that he had committed any of the offences alleged against him.

The senator, however, maintained that where the allegations were found to be baseless, those responsible for deliberately manufacturing and circulating them should equally face the consequences of their actions.

“If there is evidence against me, let it be produced. If there is none, those who have deliberately manufactured and circulated these allegations should equally be held accountable under the law,” he said.

According to him, the issue had moved beyond ordinary political disagreement because the allegations touch on terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and national security.

The senators therefore called on the DSS, Police, DIA and other relevant institutions to conduct a thorough investigation and determine whether there was any evidence supporting the claims.

Security Roles ‘Distorted’

The Bauchi South lawmaker also explained what he described as possible attempts to link him to criminal activities.

Buba recalled that his previous responsibilities in the National Assembly exposed him to sensitive national security and intelligence matters.

He said he worked with the military, intelligence agencies and other security institutions as part of efforts to combat banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

According to him, some of those engagements were confidential because of their implications for national security and could therefore not be publicly discussed at the time.

The senator alleged that legitimate activities connected to his security-related responsibilities had subsequently been distorted and presented in a way that suggested he was associated with criminal elements.

He insisted that the only credible way to resolve the issue was for competent security institutions to examine the allegations, available intelligence and evidence and reach an independent conclusion.

Matter Dates Back To 2025

Buba also traced the controversy to publications that allegedly contained accusations against him. He recalled that he petitioned the Nigeria Police Force in September 2025 over the publications, after which the matter resulted in criminal proceedings before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He further disclosed that his legal team had commenced proceedings against an individual it believed was responsible for some of the allegations.

According to the senator, the matter was reportedly referred for Interpol intervention.

Buba, however, said relying solely on court proceedings was no longer enough, given the national security implications of the allegations.

The senator said the involvement of the DSS, DIA and other relevant security institutions would provide an opportunity for the claims to be tested through intelligence and criminal investigation rather than through political exchanges.

Appeals For Restraint

The senator also appealed to his supporters to remain calm and allow the relevant institutions to do their work.

He warned against insults, threats, violence or retaliation in response to the allegations, stressing that the matter should be pursued strictly through lawful channels.

Buba said he remained committed to peace, security, justice and the interests of the people of Bauchi State and Nigeria.

He also reaffirmed his readiness to cooperate fully with investigators and accept the outcome of any credible investigation conducted on the basis of facts and evidence.
