BEVERLY HILLS, April 05, (THEWILL) – A correctional facility in Owerri, the Imo State capital, was on Monday set ablaze by unknown gunmen.

The attackers also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.

The invaders further freed the suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.

THEWILL gathered that the gunmen operated for two hours from 1am till 3am on Monday. They also sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities, a security source confided in our correspondent.

On breaking into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, the attackers told the inmates to go home.

Reports have it that the gunmen took advantage of the calm atmosphere of Easter to invade the centre in the wee hours of Monday.

When contacted, spokesperson for the correctional centre, James Madugba, said they were yet to address the press on the development.

On his part, Police PRO, Orlando Ikeokwu, also confirmed the attack, saying there was no casualty recorded.

According to him, only the State CID section of the Police command was attacked by the gunmen and suspects released.

He, however, assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the matter.

Already major streets around the areas have been cordoned off by security operatives.
