SAN FRANCISCO, October 25, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the North East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2017, a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters – (Senate) Senator Ita Enang, said Wednesday.
The Act establishes the North-East Development Commission, an agency modeled after the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), with the mandate to receive and manage funds allocated by the Federal Government and international donor agencies for the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration and reconstruction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of insurgency as well as tackling the menace of poverty and environmental challenges of the area.
THEWILL reports that the region was degraded by the Boko Haram, a terrorist group, which says it, is against western education and culture.
The bill provides for the offices of the chairman, Managing Director, Executive Director (Administration and Finance), Executive Director (Humanitarian Affairs), Executive Director (Operations) and members representing the North East Zone to be rotated amongst member states of the commission.
