Ronaldo insists the episode has not ended his international career, revealing that he still intends to represent Portugal despite the fallout.
October 06, (THEWILL) – Cristiano Ronaldo has finally revealed his version of what happened between himself and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, saying the disagreement that led to his departure from the national team’s training camp was the result of a broken agreement over his involvement.
The 41-year-old captain issued a lengthy first-person statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the controversial camp, insisting that the dispute was not simply about being left out of Portugal’s starting XI against Norway.
Ronaldo said he had already been considering ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup and had even prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese public.
However, he revealed that the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) persuaded him to reconsider his decision and continue playing for the national team.
The forward said the federation president subsequently asked for his opinion on the appointment of Jesus, who was being considered alongside other candidates.
Ronaldo said he backed the decision.
“I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” he said. “That is why, on the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice.”
According to Ronaldo, he believed Jesus was the right man for the job and was pleased with the appointment.
But the relationship would later deteriorate during the September international window.
Ronaldo Says Jesus Had A Plan For Him
Ronaldo revealed that Jesus contacted him shortly after taking charge of Portugal and requested a meeting.
The two eventually met at the Cidade do Futebol, where Ronaldo’s club was conducting its pre-season preparations.
According to the Portugal captain, Jesus told him that he was counting on him and considered his presence fundamental to the national team’s plans.
The coach then presented Ronaldo with a proposed plan for his involvement.
“He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match,” Ronaldo said.
Jesus also raised the possibility of Ronaldo not travelling with Portugal for the away matches against Norway and Denmark.
Instead, the plan would have seen Ronaldo play the opening match, remain in Portugal and then rejoin the squad ahead of the match at the Estádio do Dragão.
Ronaldo said he rejected the proposal immediately.
He explained that his objection was not because he wanted to play every minute, but because he felt his responsibility as captain required him to travel with his teammates.
“It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team,” Ronaldo said. “That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example.”
According to Ronaldo, Jesus ultimately accepted his reasoning.
The Agreement Appeared to Remain in Place
Ronaldo said the understanding between himself and Jesus remained intact when the coach later visited his home in Lisbon before the start of the camp.
He described the meeting as calm and said the principles previously agreed between them were maintained.
Ronaldo then started Portugal’s match at Alvalade before being substituted.
There was no confrontation, according to the forward, who said he accepted the decision without complaint.
He even handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes himself.
“I put the armband on Bruno Fernandes myself, far from imagining that I might be taking my last steps as a player and captain of the National Team,” Ronaldo said.
For him, the most important thing that day was Portugal’s victory.
“Winning is always good; in Portugal and for my country, even better,” he added.
However, the situation changed ahead of the following match against Norway.
What Happened Before The Norway Match?
Ronaldo said that, initially, he believed he would not play against Norway because his physical recovery and training schedule had been designed around featuring in the subsequent match at the Dragão.
Then, during lunchtime on the day of the Norway fixture, an assistant coach approached him while the squad was eating and informed him that Jesus wanted to speak with him.
Ronaldo said the Portugal coach then asked whether he was physically capable of playing 30 minutes.
The question came as a surprise because it was outside the physical-management plan that had previously been discussed.
Nevertheless, Ronaldo said he agreed.
“I was fully focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day,” he said.
“Without any problem.”
Jesus then reportedly told Ronaldo to prepare because he would play 30 minutes.
The captain followed the instruction and began warming up at half-time.
But the promised appearance never came.
“I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called,” Ronaldo said.
That was the moment Ronaldo believes the agreement between them was broken.
“The coach had broken his word to me,” he added.
Ronaldo Says The Issue Was Bigger Than Being Dropped

Ronaldo’s explanation provides important context to the events that followed.
The controversy could initially have been viewed simply as frustration from a senior player who had been left on the bench.
But Ronaldo insists that was not the main issue.
He says he had already accepted a plan that involved reduced playing time and physical management.
He had also rejected an opportunity to remain in Portugal rather than travel with the squad because he believed his responsibility as captain required him to be alongside his teammates.
His frustration, therefore, came from what he describes as an agreement that was subsequently changed.
That distinction is central to Ronaldo’s explanation of why he eventually left the camp.
Ronaldo Reveals Who Was Present During Earlier Discussions
The Portugal captain also provided another significant detail about his initial meeting with Jesus.
He said Simão Coutinho, sporting director of Al Nassr, was present during the conversation.
Ronaldo described Coutinho as the person to whom Jesus reported throughout the previous season and one of those responsible for his appointment by the Saudi club in 2025.
The revelation gives additional context to the discussions between Ronaldo and Jesus, particularly because both men already had a working relationship from their time at Al Nassr.
Ronaldo subsequently said Jesus visited his home in Lisbon on the eve of the national team’s camp for another conversation.
According to the forward, that meeting was calm and the principles agreed in August remained in place.
The disagreement only became public after the Norway match.

Ronaldo Has Not Retired From Portugal

Despite the dramatic circumstances surrounding his departure, Ronaldo made it clear that he has not announced his retirement from international football.
The Portugal captain had previously considered ending his international career after the World Cup, but the federation’s request persuaded him to continue.
His latest statement suggests that remains his position.
Ronaldo intends to remain available for Portugal, provided he is physically fit and any disciplinary consequences resulting from his departure are resolved.
That means the door remains open for a return to the national team.
However, whether that return comes under Jesus is now one of the biggest questions surrounding Portugal.
The Jorge Jesus Relationship Faces A Major Test
The situation is particularly significant because Ronaldo had publicly supported Jesus’ appointment.
The Portugal captain said he believed Jesus was the right choice when the coach was presented and initially appeared willing to work within his plans.
That makes the subsequent breakdown in their relationship even more striking.
Ronaldo’s account suggests the disagreement was rooted in expectations and trust rather than simply selection.
Jesus had outlined a plan. Ronaldo says he accepted it.
The plan then changed.
And when Ronaldo was told he would play 30 minutes against Norway, he expected that commitment to be honoured.
Instead, he warmed up without being introduced.
The fallout ultimately resulted in his departure from the camp and triggered widespread speculation about the future of Portugal’s most famous player.
Portugal Now Faces Difficult Situation
The Portuguese Football Federation must now deal with a dispute that has moved well beyond a single selection decision.
Ronaldo has publicly presented his version of events and made clear that he believes Jesus broke his word.
At the same time, the coach has his own account of the circumstances surrounding the player’s departure.
That leaves Portugal facing an uncomfortable situation as it prepares for the next stage of its international campaign.
The team has already shown that it can win without Ronaldo, but replacing the influence of a player with his status is an entirely different challenge.
For Ronaldo, meanwhile, the priority appears to be making sure the circumstances surrounding his departure are understood.
At 41, the Portugal captain knows that the final chapter of his international career is approaching.
He had once planned to end that chapter after the World Cup.
Instead, he chose to continue after being persuaded by the federation.
Now, after the dispute with Jesus, his future with Portugal is once again under the spotlight.
But Ronaldo’s latest statement makes one thing clear: the Norway incident was not, in his view, simply a case of being dropped.
It was about an agreement, a promise, and what happened after that promise was broken.
And with Ronaldo insisting that he has not closed the door on Portugal, the next chapter of the saga could still be written on the pitch.
