September 09, (THEWILL) – Some Premier League clubs risk sanctions from FIFA if this weekend they field South American players, who were not released for international duty.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are among clubs that did not release Brazilian players for duty; and the clubs face a choice of not selecting those players this weekend or running the risk of sanctions.

A Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) spokesman said he was not aware of such a move despite sources claiming the CBF triggered the “automatic restriction period” of five days, which stops clubs picking players who have not been released.

Wolves, Newcastle as well as Watford could also lose players this weekend after the Chilean, Mexican and Paraguayan associations also activated the restriction clause.

With South American countries on the Red List for travel from the UK –meaning players face a 14-day quarantine upon return, the clubs chose not to release their players.

FIFA declined to comment.

The Premier League and the Football Association were not immediately available for comments either.

Liverpool would be without Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino when they face Leeds on Sunday.

The Yorkshire club would also be without star man Raphinha.

Manchester City would be without their number one shot stopper Ederson Moraes and Gabriel Jesus against Leicester City on Saturday, while Manchester United midfielder Fred and Chelsea defender Thiago Silva would also be affected.

Meanwhile, players from Aston Villa and Tottenham featured for Argentina in their game against Brazil which was abandoned after five minutes last Sunday.
