OPINION: Pushing Imo To Greater Heights Irrespective Of Party

June 25, (THEWILL) – The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Imo State Chapter, can be said to be gradually going into extinction. The party ruled the country for Sixteen (16) years and It was not rosy for its leadership then. Imo was once a PDP State with Chief Achike Udenwa, who ruled under the platform as governor for eight (8) years. One of the greatest things Chief Udenwa did for Imo was building the State Secretariat.

Imo PDP, since its inception, had been headed by different personalities from the party’s family. It could not even deliver the much-needed dividends of democracy the people clamoured for. Unfortunately for the party, It lost power in the 2015 Presidential election when former President Muhammadu Buhari wrestled it from Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. Although the Bayelsa State-born ex-Nigerian leader received a strong knock for having not played the game well, which they claimed would have returned the PDP to power after the 2015 polls.

As the November 11 governorship election is gathering momentum, Imo PDP Working Committee held a press briefing recently, making known the mass exodus from the party, in which its members accused the governorship candidate of the party, Sen Samuel Anyanwu, of destroying the platform without redemption and that he had never relented in deploying the powers of his office to fight members of the Working Committee and intimidated even ordinary members of the umbrella.

Glo

For the above reason, the PDP has been torn completely in the State. Of course, there should not be a cause for alarm over the mass Exodus of the party stalwarts and their interest to have pitched tents with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, being led by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Uzodimma is the Executive Governor of Imo State whose track record on human capacity and infrastructural developments has attracted lots of testimonies from people from various political parties. These our brothers and sisters that have posed as opponents to the ruling APC in Imo have failed to realise that they are also freeborn of the State that should be rallying round their brother, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, in his selfless efforts to restore the lost glory of Imo. Would it not be right for these men and women of valour to assist in pushing the State forward rather than criticizing the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery (3R) government?

The peaceful coexistence that is reigning in this state ought not to be truncated or kicked against by anyone who feels unnecessarily aggrieved over a common issue that should not be swept under the carpet.

Let us remember that Chief Evan Enwerem was the Imo State Governor in 1992, and Achike Udenwa, Ikedi Ohakim and Rochas Okorocha followed. Udenwa was a chief accountant in a private construction company before he became the governor of the state in 1999. Ohakim was a Commissioner before he became governor in 2007. Okorocha was a federal political appointee for a brief period before he became governor in 2011, while Uzodimma was a two-time Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before he became the Governor.

Lo and behold, during his outing in the upper legislative chambers of the National Assembly, Uzodimma headed the Senate Committee on Aviation. So many sons and daughters of Orlu zone particularly and Imo in general, got federal jobs through him. All the Airports across the country were given a solid facelift. Why wouldn’t Ndi Imo continue supporting a man that believes in qualitative work?

In fact, his predecessors’ achievements, during their time in office as Governors, can not be compared with what Sen Uzodimma has done since he assumed office.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, Samdaddy, and other candidates are all illustrious sons of our dear State. We suppose they can join forces with the shared prosperity government to sustain the good work.

It has now become pertinent to humbly advise Sen Samdaddy, Athan Achonu, Ogunewe and others to have it at the back of their minds that Imo had suffered setbacks in the past before Uzodimma came on board and immediately swung into action to deliver the State from its terrible state of comatose. Therefore, any lover of Imo should be thinking of uplifting it and not pulling it down to the abyss of penury.
