Okupe Resigns As Labour Party Presidential Campaign DG, Appeals Conviction For Money Laundering

December 20, (THEWILL) – The Director General of Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, has resigned his position.

Okupe, in a letter addressed to the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said his decision followed a ruling of a Federal High Court on Monday.

Okukpe, a Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Monday, sentenced to two years imprisonment or an option of N13m fine, by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu.

Glo

Justice Ojukwu, found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16(1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act, for accepting cash payments without going through the financial institution, in excess of the threshold allowed under the Act.

While Okupe has paid the fine and returned home, a member of his legal team, Tolu Babaleye (Esq), said the LP Campaign DG has approached the appeal court to challenge his conviction.

But, in a letter dated December 20, 2022, Okupe said he would rather step aside as the Campaign DG to avoid distractions in the Labour Party.

The letter reads: “You will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same.

“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.

“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG, who can continue the assignment with zero distractions.”
