January 25, (THEWILL) – Goalkeeper Jan Oblak has tested positive for COVID-19, according to La Liga defending champions Atlético Madrid.

The Spanish giants announced on their official website that the goalkeeper has been infected with the virus and will be isolated according to local regulations.

Atletico Madrid said in a statement that the footballer “is self isolating and strictly following the recommendations of the health authorities.”

Fortunately for Oblak, Atletico Madrid will not be in action this weekend due to the international break, and they will not be playing the following midweek either because they are out of the Copa del Rey.

Their next match is on Sunday, February 6th at 16:15 CET (4:15 pm local time) against Xavi Hernandez’s resurgent Barcelona, by which time Diego Simeone’s side will happily have Oblak back in between the sticks for the crucial tie.

Atletico and Barcelona currently sit fourth and fifth on the league standings respectively and the February 6 fixture will be of equal importance to both sides with only one point separating the pair after matchday 21.
