August 16, (THEWILL) – The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), has shifted their planned strike, which was supposed to commence Wednesday.
The postponement of the industrial action by the union is coming on the heels of the intervention of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in a letter, urging the unions to stop their proposed strike.
NUATE had on Tuesday, directed Aviation Security (AVSEC) and logistics sub-sector to commence immediate strike from Wednesday, August 16, citing poor remuneration of security personnel.
But in a swift reaction, NCAA intervened through a letter to NUATE, urging the union to postpone the withdrawal of their services.
The letter addressed to NUATE, dated August 15, and copied Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace stated, “Your letter of 3rd August 2023 on the above subject matter refers. The Authority seeks your indulgence to postpone the withdrawal of services by the private security firms at the nation’s airport scheduled to start on Wednesday 16th August 2023.
“This will create an opportunity for the Authority to intervene in this dispute and with a view to find lasting solutions to the issues raised by NUATE. A meeting will be called with the union, private security firms and the airlines.
“You may wish to note the precarious situation of the aviation industry, as such we must all collaborate to avoid making matters worse for all stakeholders.”
Confirming the postponement of the action, NUATE General Secretary, Comrade Ocheme Aba, said Capt. Musa Nuhu, DGCA intervened by asking for a week’s extension.
He added that “the union has asked members to stay action on the strike, which was expected to commence this afternoon.”
