Nigerian Idol: 2 Down, 9 Standing

BEVERLY HILLS, May 18, (THEWILL) – Two of the contestants on the Nigerian Idol competition, Faith Mac and Dotun, have been evicted from the show.

They scored the least votes in the first round of public voting.

The performances of last week had the surviving contestants perform covers of songs done by their music models, while the judges –Seyi Shay, DJ Sose, and Obi Asika– observed.

Kingdom, who is a lover of popstar, Teni, gave a rendition of the song Uyo Meyo, which was appreciated by the audience.

According to DJ Sose, Kingdom seemed very comfortable with the song and Seyi Shay disclosed that the performance was emotive.

Another contestant, Daniel, did a cover of James Arthur’s song, Empty Spaces and his performance was met with criticism from Seyi Shay and Obi Asika, but DJ Sose was of the view that he did a good job.

On his part, Faith Jason opted for the song ‘All Time Low’ by Jon Bellion — a song he performed in the audition.

His performance was appreciated by the audience and the judges even Seyi Shay could not contain her excitement.

While disclosing her admiration for the K-Pop band BTS, Beyonce chose to do a cover of the track, Dynamite.

Her work was commended by DJ Sose and Obi Asika noted her growth through the stages of the competition.

Emmanuel gave a soulful cover of Labrinth’s song, Beneath Your Beautiful, which was appreciated by Obi Asika for the palpable emotion. Seyi Shay described it as ‘captivating’ and DJ Sose remarked that Emmanuel will do better as a live performer than a studio recording.

The sixth contestant who the viewers saved was Akunna, the entertainment lawyer.

Dressed in a glowing red dress, she performed the cover of Beyonce’s “XO” and her strong voice carried the performance.

The judges applauded her vocal dexterity and stage presence.

The voters also showed kindness to Clinton, who tested his vocals with John Legend’s “Tonight”, with some help from the live band.

Reacting, Seyi Shay felt that the delivery was not “natural”, but applauded him for his vocals. DJ Sose, on his part, felt that he “owned” the song.

During the show, IK Osakioduwa goaded the judges to name the remaining contestants that would be saved if they have the power.

Obi Asika and DJ Sose chose Francis and Comfort, respectively, but Seyi Shay decided to plead the fifth.

Also getting saved by the voting audience was Francis, who chose to perform Sam Smith’s “Writing On The Wall” — the theme song for the James Bond film Spectre.

The ninth and final contestant to get endorsements and earn nods from the viewers on the night was Comfort, who could not control her emotions when she discovered that she had made it to the next stage.

This meant that for Dotun and Faith Mac, their respective journeys at Nigerian Idol Season 6 had come to an end.
