February 02, (THEWILL) – Nigerian billionaire, Dozy Mmobuosi, is reportedly closing in on a £90 million deal to purchase Sheffield United Football Club.
Mmobuosi still needs to pass the English Football League’s owners’ and directors’ test, but there have been no issues raised so far. The Bramall Lane club has been seeking a new owner for some time due to the current owner, HRH Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s struggles to maintain funding.
Mmobuosi, estimated to be worth £7 billion, is the founder of Tingo Mobile PLC and created his own foundation in 2021, with the goal of promoting progress in Africa and improving education, healthcare, and Information Technology development.
His acquisition of Sheffield United could bring financial stability to the club, which has been under a transfer embargo due to defaulting on payments owed to another club.
Despite the financial challenges, Sheffield United’s team, led by Paul Heckingbottom, is currently second in the league and on track for promotion this season. It will make Mmobuosi the first African to own an EPL side if that happens.
