September 14, (THEWILL) – Nigerian-American driver Ugo Ugochukwu has been crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 champion after producing a crucial second-place finish in the championship-deciding race in Madrid.
The 19-year-old Campos Racing driver arrived at the final round with everything still to play for, having been locked level on points with British driver Freddie Slater after a fiercely contested season.
With the championship coming down to the final Feature Race at the Madring circuit on Sunday, Ugochukwu delivered when it mattered most.
Although Finland’s Tuukka Taponen took victory in the Madrid race, Ugochukwu’s second-place finish earned him the points required to pull clear of Slater and secure the championship by a 14-point margin.
The result also secured a significant piece of history for the young driver, who becomes the first Nigerian-American to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
Dramatic championship battle goes down to final race
Ugochukwu’s title triumph came after a season-long battle in which Slater remained a major threat heading into the final weekend.
