September 05, (THEWILL) – Esther Nworgu won Nigeria’s second medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris on Wednesday.
Competing in the women’s up to 41kg para-powerlifting event, she claimed the silver medal after lifting 112kg and 118kg. Despite setting two new Paralympic records, Nworgu finished just behind China’s Zhe Cui, who lifted 119kg to take the gold.
This medal follows Nigeria’s earlier success in the games, with Eniola Bolaji claiming a bronze medal in para-badminton. Nworgu’s performance continues her impressive run in international competitions, where she has consistently delivered for her country on the global stage.
Nworgu’s silver is another proud moment for Nigeria in powerlifting, a sport in which the country has historically excelled at the Paralympics. The Nigerian Paralympic team, once again, outperformed their Olympic counterparts, who returned from Paris last month with no medals to show for their efforts.
The achievement has drawn national attention, with sports commentators and fans alike praising the Paralympians for bringing home medals when hopes for Olympic success were dashed. Nworgu, already a well-known figure in para-sports, has added yet another accolade to her growing list of achievements.
With several events still ongoing, expectations are high that more Nigerian athletes may yet bring home medals before the Paralympic Games conclude on Sunday, September 8.
