August 24, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Under-20 female national team, the Super Falconets landed on Thursday, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, after their appearance at the World Cup in Costa Rica.
Upon arrival, they were welcomed by Toyin Ibitoye, a former Super Eagles media officer and representative of the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, and Muhammad Sanusi, the General Secretary of the football body, the NFF.
Their arrival was foreshadowed by the embarrassment of Wednesday, when pictures of the team’s players and officials dozing off on an airport floor in Istanbul, Turkey, went viral, to the absolute dismay of Nigerians.
The NFF quickly hashed together an explanation for why the squad experienced those difficulties, putting the blame on a problem with logistics and FIFA’s handling of the team travels for contesting nations. At the airport, Sanusi chatted with the weary and jaded Falconets’ players and officials before they departed.
Speaking about their allowances and pay, Sanusi said: “It (money) was approved for Super Falcons. It’s at the ministry being processed that we should pay you from there. We want to assure you that the same time the Super Falcons are going to be paid, you’re also going to be paid your bonuses (competition bonuses). (The Minister) sent something. He said the coach and the 21 players.”
