August 08, (THEWILL) — Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil international Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United in a £75 million deal, strengthening Mikel Arteta’s midfield.
The 28-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year contract with the Gunners, with an option to extend his stay for a further year.
The move comes after Arsenal saw an initial offer rejected before eventually reaching an agreement with Newcastle for a player who still had two years remaining on his contract.
Guimarães had informed Newcastle earlier in the summer that he wanted to pursue a new challenge, with the midfielder reportedly viewing a move to Arsenal as an opportunity to compete for major honours.
Guimarães: ‘I’m Your Warrior’
The Brazilian expressed his excitement after completing the move and said he was ready to embrace the challenge of playing for the Premier League champions.
“I’m your warrior, I’ll never give up. Hopefully, we can create many, many good memories together,” he stated.
Guimarães also revealed that conversations with Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta played an important role in convincing him that a move to north London was the right step.
“I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think being an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life,” he said.
Arsenal Add More Quality to Midfield
The arrival of Guimarães gives Arteta another high-level option in an already impressive midfield department.
The Brazil international is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder or in a box-to-box role, giving Arsenal additional flexibility in their pursuit of domestic and European success.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta described Guimarães as a player who combines technical quality with leadership and consistency.
Betta stated, “With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year.”
His arrival could also allow Declan Rice to be rotated more frequently, while providing Arteta with another option alongside Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Martin Ødegaard.
Newcastle Lose Another Major Star
For Newcastle, Guimarães’ departure represents another significant change during a turbulent summer.
The midfielder joined the Magpies from Lyon in January 2022 for around £40 million and went on to make 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals and winning the Carabao Cup.
His exit follows the departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3 million and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100 million, taking Newcastle’s player sales beyond £240 million this summer.
The club said the £75 million agreement represented one of the top-10 highest transfer fees ever received for a player aged 28 or older.
Newcastle had initially hoped to keep Guimarães but ultimately accepted his decision to seek a new challenge after the midfielder made it clear that he wanted the opportunity to compete for more major trophies.

A New Challenge for the Brazilian
Guimarães leaves Newcastle after becoming an important figure at St James’ Park, where he developed a strong relationship with supporters and teammates.
Reflecting on his departure, the midfielder admitted it was one of the most difficult decisions of his career.
“This is one of the toughest decisions of my life,” Guimarães said. “I fell in love with this place. I really mean that.”
However, the midfielder believes the time is right for a fresh challenge, with Arsenal offering him the opportunity to compete for the Premier League and Champions League.
