December 04, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United goalkeeper, Nick Pope, will undergo surgery on a dislocated shoulder sustained in Saturday’s fixture against Manchester United. The 31-year-old landed awkwardly after making a save in the 86th minute and specialists have determined surgery is required, sidelining Pope for an estimated four months.
The injury continues Newcastle’s goalkeeping woes, with no clear long-term replacement available. With Martin Dubravka currently filling in but injury-prone himself, the club lacks experienced depth in a key position. Younger options like Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie lack the English Premier League experience needed for a busy festive period. The timing could not be worse as crucial league and European matches approach.
Pope has been a key figure since joining Newcastle in 2022. His absence will challenge the team during a hectic December schedule with seven more matches to navigate. Away trips to Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan are followed by home games against top-four hopefuls Tottenham and Manchester City. Maintaining momentum in Pope’s absence will be vital for Eddie Howe and his side.
The surgery also jeopardises Pope’s chances of returning to the England squad ahead of Euro 2024. While first-choice Jordan Pickford is secure, the backup roles are potentially up for grabs. With Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone preferred recently, four months on the sidelines will make it difficult for Pope to force his way back into Gareth Southgate’s thinking.
