September 01, (THEWILL) — Newcastle United have finalised their striker reinforcements ahead of Alexander Isak’s British record departure to Liverpool.
The Magpies reached an agreement with Brentford for Yoane Wissa in a £55 million deal, completing their summer transfer strategy after previously acquiring Nick Woltemade from Germany for £69.3 million.
The Tyneside club had insisted on signing two forwards before sanctioning Isak’s £125 million exit, following Callum Wilson’s free transfer departure.
Eddie Howe’s squad was left with only Isak and 22-year-old William Osula as senior striking options, prompting the urgent recruitment drive.
Brentford will receive the Wissa fee across two instalments, alongside a 25 per cent sell-on clause for any future transfer.
The 28-year-old forward, who netted 19 English Premier League goals last season, becomes Newcastle’s second major attacking addition after their failed pursuit of Benjamin Šeško to Manchester United.
Newcastle’s summer-long chase for Wissa began in July with a rejected £25 million offer. Subsequent bids reaching £35 million plus £5 million in add-ons were also turned down by Brentford, who maintained their valuation throughout negotiations.
The protracted negotiations caused frustration for Wissa, who publicly expressed disappointment at Brentford’s stance on what he considered reasonable transfer terms.
However, the Bees’ determination to maximise their return has ultimately secured the substantial fee they demanded for their key striker.
